In the News: Registered Counsellors can help the mental health crisis in Australia
We are in the news about Australia's mental health crisis!
I had the privilege of being interviewed by ABC News regarding the current mental health crisis in Australia. Registered counsellors are an immediate solution to this crisis, but the public don't realise we are an option and what we can do. Unfortunately, the reasons for this are largely political and hierarchical.
I hope we get to a place where all mental health professionals put clients and the public ahead of politics. No one in Australia that needs help should be left waiting for months for mental health treatment. This is just unacceptable.
Toowoomba counsellor Kathryn Millist-Spendlove said she was frustrated she could not do more to help as the latest COVID-19 wave peaked in Queensland.
"I think that psychology and psychiatry are absolutely vital … but not everybody needs that level of mental health care and not everyone needs a diagnosis, or medication," Ms Millist-Spendlove said.
"The fact that there are options for people that don't need those things, that people aren't being made aware of, and that the government aren't subsidising, I think that's a real shame."
